This week we have been making a secret card for this special sunday.... but shhhhh, don't tell Mummy!
On the construction table we have played with the blocks, making towers and counting how many blocks were in each tower and making houses and lorries too. We have also had the sticklebricks out, building tractors, cars and even a dinosaur! Construction toys develop our imagination by letting us express our own ideas and also help us to develop our physical dexterity through our handling and control.
Outside this week we have played with the cars on the slope and with the chalks (always a favourite!).
We have had the parachute out again and played with some numbers and shapes on the parachute. In phonics, it has been about consolidating what we have learnt over the last few weeks and so we have looked again at 'a', 't', 's' and 'p' so that everyone has chance to get familiar with them before we move on. We have also looked at rhyming, read a book of animal poems and played with a rhyming game. Learning about rhyming will help us when we are ready to move on to reading.
This week we have been looking at 'Spring' and on the craft table we have been making sheep for a wall display. We have looked at different textures and materials and felt the materials as we created our sheep.
On the construction table we have played with cogs and wheels, making tractors and cars and lorries and have also had the magnets out. Magnets are fascinating and we can make and play so many things with them.
To help with our concentration and listening, we played the soundtrack game - we had to listen and try to identify different sounds.
In phonics, the sound of the week this week was 'p'.
On Friday we had the parachute out ('p' for parachute!) and we all had so much fun holding onto the edge and making it move up and down and taking it in turns to run underneath.
We have really enjoyed the beautiful weather this week and have spent lots of time outside. We have played with the chalks, paint brushes, sand and water and have been out-and-about on Listening Walks. The children listened carefully to the birds, cars motorbikes, dogs and footsteps and we discussed what it means to listen and the difference between seeing something and hearing it.
On the mark-making table, we have had the chalk boards and chunky chalks out as well as lots of paper, pens, pencils, notebooks and clip-boards. We have had lots of fun experimenting with the different ways to make marks.
In phonics we have looked at the 'ssss' sound and we have done some work on recognising numbers by hiding and finding the number cards outside. We even drew our own hopscotch grid with the chalks outside. On the computer we looked at "Fuzzy Numbers" and how to count and recognise our numbers.
We have been learning about Africa this week and on the craft table we have made lots of animal masks. The children had free choice of pens, pencils, coloured paper, scissors and glue and everyone got creative.
On the games table we have played with the animal puzzles and have separated the animals which live in Africa from the other animals.
We played with the blocks in the construction area - building and counting as we made the highest towers we could. And then the animals joined the blocks and so we made some super fences for the animals.
On Monday we got ready for Shrove Tuesday by preparing lots of pancakes. We looked at measuring and weighing and what was 'heavy' and what was 'light'. Then on Tuesday we ate our pancakes and squeezed orange onto them.
We have spent time outside when it wasn't raining too much and we have done lots of chalking.
Someone kindly donated some puzzles and games to preschool and so the children enjoyed helping to sort out and check these.
